Rioja’s Autumn Magic: Vineyard Hikes and Scenic Drives

Discover Rioja's magic. Explore self-guided trails, savor local cuisine, and capture stunning views from a hot air balloon. Come fall in love with Rioja!

Fall in love with Rioja’s vineyards this autumn. The second half of October is ideal: the summer heat has faded, harvest is complete, and you’ll likely have the trails to yourself.

Rioja’s 66,000 hectares of vines transform into a tapestry of color. Red grape varieties turn ochre and red, while white grapes become a pale yellow. It’s a sight to behold, even from a distance.

Hiking through the vineyards is the best way to experience this beauty up close. Most wine villages offer self-guided trails. Before you set off, enjoy a hearty almuerzo with fried eggs, chorizo, or wild mushrooms. Or grab a picnic lunch – a bocata (sandwich) and a bottle of local wine are perfect fuel for your hike.

The Rioja Alta Wine Route suggests several itineraries, including village-to-village walks and trails along the Ebro River. If you prefer a guided experience, several tour operators offer hikes, bike tours, segway excursions, and even hot air balloon rides – all sustainable ways to enjoy the landscape.

For a more leisurely experience, take a scenic drive. Start in Logroño and head towards Laguardia in the Rioja Alavesa Wine Route. The N232a highway offers stunning views of the Cantabria mountains. Keep an eye out for the ‘Foehn effect’ – a carpet of clouds rolling down the mountainside. Continue to Labastida, then turn towards Haro. When you reach the Train Station District, head back to Logroño on the N-232.
