A Tale of Visionaries: How Casablanca Valley Became Chile’s Great Wine Capital

Pablo Morandé and Sergio Correa Undurraga were instrumental in establishing Casablanca Valley as a leading Chilean wine region, focusing on cool-climate varieties like Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Their vision redefined Chilean viticulture, positioning the valley on the global wine map. Building on this legacy, Alberto Guolo, head winemaker at Casas del Bosque, continues to innovate and elevate Casablanca’s wines through sustainable practices. Together, they have transformed the valley into a renowned destination for fine, sustainable wines.

Pablo Morandé and Sergio Correa Undurraga: The Visionary Pioneers

Pablo Morandé and Sergio Correa Undurraga played pivotal roles in establishing Casablanca Valley as a cornerstone of Chilean winemaking. In the 1980s, Morandé ventured into the valley, recognizing its unique terroir shaped by ocean breezes and morning mists, ideal for producing refined cool-climate wines. He envisioned Casablanca as “the world capital of celestial wine” and laid the groundwork for its global reputation. Correa Undurraga shared this vision, emphasizing the valley’s “sophisticated terroir” and its potential to craft exceptional Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Together, their dedication to pushing boundaries and embracing innovation redefined Chilean viticulture, proving that the country could excel beyond warm-climate reds and positioning Casablanca as a global wine destination.

Alberto Guolo: The Contemporary Innovator

Alberto Guolo represents the next chapter in Casablanca’s evolution. As head winemaker at Casas del Bosque, he continues the legacy of excellence established by Morandé and Correa Undurraga. Since 2017, Guolo has focused on enhancing the quality and identity of Casablanca’s wines, particularly cool-climate varieties like Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay. His innovative practices, such as sustainable vineyard management and the creation of iconic wines like La Trampa, have further cemented the valley’s reputation. Guolo’s recognition as “Young Winemaker of the Year” in 2023 by La Cav is a testament to his impact on the industry.

A Collective Legacy

Together, these three individuals embody the evolution of Casablanca Valley’s wine industry. Morandé and Correa Undurraga laid the groundwork with their visionary commitment to cool-climate viticulture, overcoming skepticism and establishing a new identity for Chilean wine. Guolo, building on this legacy, represents the innovation and forward-thinking leadership necessary to sustain and grow the valley’s prominence in the global wine landscape. Their collective efforts have transformed Casablanca into both a Great Wine Capital and a beacon of craftsmanship and sustainability.
