This report presented during the GWC International Conference by Palbi Sharma Bhargava, Great Wine Capitals International Research Grant Winner 2023, delves into the influence and experiences of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities in wine tourism. Focusing on Canada’s Okanagan Valley and Napa Valley and Sonoma regions in California, the report examines how these diverse groups shape and are shaped by the wine industry in North America.

Palbi Sharma Bhargava Presenting Her Research Findings on Diversity in Wine Tourism

Through interviews and direct observations, the study sheds light on both the unique contributions of BIPOC communities and the barriers they encounter. Findings show that while diversity is gaining attention in wine tourism, many BIPOC-owned or operated wineries, along with tourists from these communities, still face challenges around visibility, inclusivity, and accessibility. Traditional marketing and winery practices often focus on more familiar images of wine culture, which can unintentionally overlook the rich cultural perspectives BIPOC individuals bring. Many participants in the study also noted that current industry norms, such as luxury-focused branding and high-cost tastings, can create unwelcoming atmospheres for a broader audience.

The report offers several recommendations for making wine tourism more inclusive, including diversifying marketing to reflect a broader range of cultural stories, supporting BIPOC-owned wineries, and fostering a welcoming environment where all visitors feel valued. Practical suggestions, such as hosting culturally diverse events or offering storytelling that highlights BIPOC contributions, provide a roadmap for tourism professionals to better engage and represent the communities that enrich North American wine culture.

Overall, this study encourages wine tourism professionals to rethink traditional practices and embrace new perspectives, helping to build an industry that truly reflects and celebrates the diversity within the wine regions.
