The Best Of Wine Tourism award values the sustainable design and energy efficiency of the new Bodegas Beronia winery, inaugurated in 2022. It is the first winery in the world to obtain LEED V4 certification, which certifies Leadership in Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Design. Other certifications obtained (2022) are LEED GOLD and Wineries for Climate Protection. The latter certifies the application of environmentally friendly techniques throughout the production process.
The oenological direction of the project was carried out by Matías Calleja, oenologist and manager of the winery. The architectural project is by IDOM, with the architects Gonzalo Tello and Borja Gómez, and the landscaping by Isaac Escalante Camus.
The winery is 100% sustainable, fully integrated into the Rioja landscape. With a revolutionary geothermal energy system to air-condition the facilities and achieve lower energy consumption; multiple technological innovations in which civil engineers, industrial engineers, architects, ecologists, hydrogeologists and experts in environmental quality, achieving a holistic conception in the creation of a winery.
This new conception includes the use of rainwater and natural light, the reduction of noise pollution and comprehensive waste management, making it one of the most efficient and sustainable wineries in Europe
