Founded by Terry and Mary Peabody in 1998, their vision to create a world-class winery led them to the distinctive terroir and landscapes of Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand. Guided by a philosophy of quality, innovation, and stewardship, Craggy Range crafts iconic wines from its estate vineyards, chosen for their exceptional soils and unique climates, yielding wines of remarkable character and complexity.
Today, the family’s commitment endures through the leadership of three generations of the Peabody family working together. Executive Director David Peabody reflects on their journey: “Our family searched all over the world for the perfect destination to start our dream, and there is a reason they chose Hawke’s Bay. This region offers a truly unique, world-class terroir. The land here has a story to tell, and through our wines, we aim to honour that history while crafting something truly timeless.”
Craggy Range’s deep-rooted connection to the land is further exemplified by the establishment of a 1,000-year trust, ensuring the winery remains under family stewardship for generations to come. This long-term vision underscores the family’s belief in preserving and enhancing the land, reinforcing their legacy in New Zealand’s wine industry.
At the helm of winemaking is Chief Winemaker Ben Tombs, a Marlborough native whose passion for viticulture began at 17. With experience spanning Burgundy, Oregon, and the Yarra Valley, Ben brings a global perspective to Craggy Range, blending innovation with tradition. His dedication to excellence was recognized when he was named New Zealand Young Winemaker of the Year in 2020.
Discussing the intricacies of Craggy Range’s winemaking approach, Ben shares: “Winemaking at Craggy Range is about balance. We work with extraordinary sites that have their own unique voice, and our job is to guide that expression into the bottle with as much purity as possible. Whether it’s the power and structure of our Gimblett Gravels reds or the elegance and tension of our Te Muna Road Pinot Noir, our goal is to create wines that feel effortless, yet deeply complex.”
Craggy Range is not just a winery; it is a destination. The estate offers luxurious accommodation, fine dining, and immersive wine experiences, attracting visitors from around the world.
