A new Generation of Winemakers in Mainz

Young winegrowers are focusing increasingly on organic wines and thus paving the way for sustainably produced wines. Organic wines are produced without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers. Instead, natural methods are used for composting and pest control. After harvesting, the grapes are processed according to strict regulations to be qualified as organic wine. Organically produced wines are classified according to different levels of quality, since their character varies depending on grape variety, terroir and production process.

The Wasem family can trace its wine-growing lineage back to 1726. At the beginning of the 20th century Julius Wasem laid the foundations of today’s business. The brothers Philipp and Julius Wasem are continuing the success story of the family business and shaping the future of winegrowing in Rheinhessen. As trained winemakers and oenologists, they contribute their own ideas and innovations. Julius Wasem received the LagenCup Red as best young winemaker in 2023. What sets him apart is his keen sense of wine, environmentally friendly approach and pursuit of quality. Philipp and Julius have created a unique product with their “Wasem Brothers” wine line. The eye-catching labels and packaging give the wines a special 1920s-style atmosphere. The names such as “THE INCREDIBLE MR. WHITE” and “IT CAME OUT OF THE CELLAR” capture the imagination and show the creativity of the wine. These wines are real eye-catchers!

Sisters in wine

Dedicated Sisters, Credit: Wasem Doppelstück

At the age of 20 and 24, sisters Marie and Julia Wasem founded the Wasem Doppelstück winery. The sisters received support from their parents Burkhard and Ilona and their grandmother Magda. Marie, the elder sister, runs the office while Julia, who has a degree in oenology, takes care of the vineyards. Together they represent the values of the Wasem Doppelstück winery: Quality, femininity, craftsmanship and sustainability.

The two sisters have successfully converted their operations to organic viticulture in 2022. Their organically produced wines from are characterized by a variety of aromas that reflect the soil conditions and the location of the vineyards.

At a time when sustainability and environmental protection are becoming increasingly important, Wasem Doppelstück sets an inspiring example for a new generation of female winegrowers who bring the value of tradition and innovation into harmony with nature.
