Rioja celebrates two wine festivals in September

September marks the beginning of the grape harvest in Rioja and is not only the crucial event for the grapegrowing and winemaking industries but also an opportunity to celebrate.

In Rioja Alavesa (the area of the Rioja DOCa located in the Basque Country along the north bank of the Ebro river), the 19th annual Rioja Alavesa Wine Festival will be held on Sunday, September 16 in Lapuebla de Labarca.

Among the events are the traditional offering of the grapes from each village in the area, the pregón or official speech opening the festival and tastings of wines from the wineries in the area.

The Fiesta de la Vendimia Riojana or Rioja Grape Harvest Festival will take place from September 15 through 22 in Logroño.  The festival features the blessing of the grapes, bullfights, a jai alai tournament, concerts, outdoor barbeques and a parade.
