Bodegas Salentein first Argentinian Winery to certify Grape to Consumer Carbon Footprint

Bodegas Salentein in Mendoza, 2012 Best Of Wine Tourism winner and pioneer winery of the Uco Valley, has become the first Argentinean winery to certify the carbon footprint of their Portillo Malbec wine, where the footprint encompasses all carbon emissions generated from grape production in the vineyard, to disposal of the empty wine bottle by the consumer after consumption.

The certification process that assesses the cradle to grave life cycle carbon emissions of the wine enables Bodegas Salentein to better understand the environmental impact of their wine production, and the CO2 emissions resulting from each process. The foot printing work qualifies Bodegas Salentein to label their wine product Portillo Malbec with the Carbon Trust’s Carbon Reduction Label. The Label demonstrates to stakeholders; consumers, clients and suppliers, that Bodegas Salentein is committed to understanding the environmental impact of their products and giving a commitment to further reduce the carbon footprint over the next two years.

Commenting on the carbon footprint certification, Andres Arena, Director of Operations at Bodegas Salentein, said: “Everything we buy, produce and use has a carbon footprint. Displaying this on our product packaging via the Carbon Reduction Label is an integral part of our low carbon business strategy, and helps people easily identify products that are actively working to reduce their carbon footprint. By choosing products that carry the Label, consumers are able to make more informed purchasing choices, and are supporting companies that are working towards a more sustainable future.”

Darran Messem, Managing Director of Certification at the Carbon Trust added, “Calculating the lifecycle carbon footprint is an important first step in being able to achieve significant carbon and cost savings. We congratulate Bodegas Salentein winery for their hard work, and we are pleased to continue working with such a forward thinking winery as they further reduce their carbon emissions.”

Salentein achieved the certification for their Portillo Malbec by working with the consultancy, Alex Stewart Argentina, and by using the Footprint Expert™ toolkit developed by the Carbon Trust.
