The world-famous, deep blue Chagall windows in the Church of St Stephan and the 1000-year-old Romanesque Cathedral of St. Martin are as much of a must as the medieval Bibles of the “Man of the Millennium”, Johannes Gutenberg, the revolutionary inventor of printing with moveable metal types. Visitors come from all over the world to view these original masterpieces in the Gutenberg Museum and then to follow the “Gutenberg Route” in the footsteps of the great inventor through the old town, to admire its memorials to the old master and the places where he lived and worked.

When you need a break from so much culture and discovery, then you can seek out one of the rustic wine bars in the old town. Over glasses of wine you will quickly come into conversation with the convivial locals. There is always room for one more at the table; you just squeeze in a bit closer. But the culinary offerings have an elegant aspect, too: in recent times, young talents have really earned their stars and chef's hats in the city's restaurant kitchens. Their modern, creative and fresh cuisine entices you to enjoy a world of culinary experiences.

Situated on Germany's largest river, the state capital beckons with romantic tours of the Rhine into the UNESCO World Heritage Site Upper Middle Rhine Valley past castles, palaces, and the Loreley rock. Rheinhessen is home to a number of witnesses to its rich historical traditions.

For visitors with sporting ambitions there is a broad variety of hiking and cycling trails through Rheinhessen's hill country and the mountainous region known as “little Switzerland in Rheinhessen”. Cyclists can discover the region along well-marked theme routes. A closely interconnected network comprising 500 kilometers of uniformly signposted cycling routes offers every degree of challenge. Cycling along romantic Rhine terraces and in the world-famous wine villages, connoisseurs encounter a paradise of rural impressions, cultural highlights, unparalleled hospitality and world-class premium wines.
